Data strategies: disaster recovery planning
Disaster recovery planning (DRP) and business continuity planning (BCP) are closely related.
DRP consists of developing the minimum set of processes and procedures that are needed to allow an organisation to continue to operate in the event of a disaster, albeit at a minimal operational level.
In Australia and internationally there is a variety of standards that can help govern DRP. They cover areas such as:
- risk assessment and management
- business impact analysis
- strategy planning and agreement
- plan development
- plan testing and maintenance
Standards to consult when devising your DRP include:
- The Australian and New Zealand standard for risk management is AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk Management principles and guidelines
- SAI Global provides a range of Australian and international publications on business continuity management
Business.gov.au has created a resources package targeted at small businesses which can help inform your DRP. You can find the resources package under emergency management and recovery on the Business.gov.au website.
Numerous other disaster recovery guides, checklists and templates are available for the assistance of the individual concerned with DRP. More information about DRP is at the following links:
