Scope

This statement applies to user interactions with the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy via the digitalbusiness.gov.au website.

General

The Digital Business website makes some use of data that directly or indirectly identifies users. We take great care with practices that affect personal privacy. DBCDE staff welcome feedback from Digital Business Website users in relation to the website’s design and practices, and to this Privacy Statement. Automated data collection

Data that in some way identifies the user is gathered during interactions with the Digital Business website may occur in the following circumstances:

Computer information

It is a necessary part of visiting any web site, including the Digital Business Website, that the user’s web browser provides the machine’s identity (its IP address) to the web server, so that the server can address the reply to the correct machine. In addition, the browser type and operating system are provided.

Navigation and click-stream data

Browsing any website, including the Digital Business Website, generates a trail of the pages that are visited, and the time apparently spent displaying each page.

Data storage, use and disclosure, and retention

All personal data described in the preceding section is stored in transmission logs, and archived for a period that is yet to be determined but is likely to be at least 12 months and quite probably 7 years.

The data is used by DBCDE site software, and by staff involved in the DBCDE operation, only for:

Identified data can only be re-disclosed to the user if the user provides the unique request session number. Identified data may be disclosed to a third party only in circumstances in which it is legally authorised, such as in the investigation of a criminal offence, or in compliance with a search warrant or subpoena.

Online forums

From time to time DBCDE may publish content to the Digital Business Blog which forms part of this Digital Business Website. You are invited to post comments to these blog posts. It is common practice for blogs to require a contributing user to provide details such as a screen name (not necessarily the user’s real name) and an email address prior to posting a comment. Any email address acquired by the DBCDE in this context is only for the purpose of contacting the contributor when the posted comment does not comply with the specific terms of use of the blog or if DBCDE needs to contact that contributor for any other reason related to the blog. A contributor’s email address will not be published on the blog. However, the screen name chosen by that contributor will appear when the comment is posted on the blog.

Website feedback

To improve the service offered by this website, we seek feedback from our users. If you have any comments on the Digital Business web pages, please use the site feedback forms or email digitalbusiness@dbcde.gov.au directly. Answering the questions in these forms is voluntary and does not in any way affect your access to the Digital Business Website. The DBCDE will not disclose this feedback to any third party, other than as required by law.

The Digital Business website feedback form gives you the option of providing your email address for the purpose of allowing us to send you a confirmation email that your feedback has been received and to send you a copy of your comments.
